A Message From Our Principal

Dear Students, Parents, and the Altar Valley Community,

It is with a mix of emotions that I write to announce my upcoming retirement as principal of Altar Valley Middle School and director of Exceptional Student Services for the Altar Valley School District. Over the past eight years, I have had the privilege of serving as a special education teacher, director of Special Education, and principal of AVMS. Each of these roles has been deeply meaningful, and shortly after joining the Altar Valley team, I realized this would be my final school district—my home. I knew this would be where I would retire.

Reflecting on these years, I am filled with gratitude and pride. Together, we have celebrated significant milestones: meeting ambitious goals, persevering through the challenges of a global pandemic and virtual learning, and transforming AVMS into a B-rated school on the path to becoming an A school.

Our students continue to inspire me daily. Their determination and resilience amaze me, especially as they face challenges that my middle school self in the 1970s could never have imagined. They are remarkable, and it has been my honor to support their growth and success.

The staff I’ve worked alongside have been equally extraordinary. Their dedication, professionalism, and passion for education make me proud to have been their administrator. The special education department, in particular, has risen to every challenge, consistently meeting the needs of our students with boundless care. I have always been in awe of their commitment and skill.

As I look back on my nearly eight years at Altar Valley, I can say with absolute certainty that these have been some of the best years of my 27-year career in education. I am deeply grateful for the support I’ve received from the Altar Valley community—your partnership has been vital in our journey.

While I will miss the students, staff, and daily rhythm of life at Altar Valley, I am excited about the next chapter in my life. Rest assured, I will remain connected to this incredible community. I’ll follow the Fence Post and Connections newsletters to keep up with all the great things happening at AVMS, in the district, and in the Three Points community.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making these years so memorable and meaningful.

Warm regards,

Shelly Camp
